I've looked at those books and they do look interesting. I'm waiting for a book that does a good job of comparing the experiences of places that did have a significant accumulation of free people of color, such as New Orleans.

Under the French and Spanish model of slavery, a slave could buy freedom by accumulating sufficient money to pay fair market value to the owner. Further, if the owner refused to take fair market value, the slave could actually go to court and contest the matter.

Slaves were allowed to make their own money by working during their time off, which encouraged them to learn a trade.

And then, they could even buy the freedom of their family members!

My impression is that freed people of color were no more likely to commit crimes than others of the lower classes.

All of which casts a very negative light on Jefferson's fears of freed blacks, in my opinion.

(BTW, I assume you know that freed people of color were able to own slaves, and many did. Ironic, no?)
