NYTimes, WashPost, et al. shine at institutional memory so that a story gains complexity from being given context. "John Smith dies" you can get straight from news feeds, e.g., google news. The importance of John Smith, his place in history, this requires institutional memory, and institutions have slants. Even news feeds can have slants -- the breaking story about the Russian sub is slanted on Wikinews as "Royal Navy rescues sub," a completely different slant than WashPost news feed, "Trapped Russian Mini-Sub Crew Is Found Alive."
