I have the same dislike of the "cable boxes" that you describe. We call them "receivers" here, for the digital cable feed one DVB-C en.wikipedia.org receiver is required for each device (TV, VCR). But my upgrade to Net access left me the choice between the traditional analog TV signal and DVB-C. I stick with the former so I needn't upgrade any TV-related device.
