The senate has had five blacks, three of them republican. But let's not dwell on the senate.

Nope, you have my curiosity up. Four come to mind. Who is the fifth?

The current House had a chance a couple years back to put a black in a leadership position when Harold Ford ran against Nancy Pelosi for Minority Leader. The Democrat vote was overwhelmingly for the white person.

Care to note the number of black Dems as opposed to Reps in the House? I think not. As for Ford, he'll certainly have his chance. Just a bit early in his legislative career. He'll probably try to jump to the senate too.
