Alighieri,

re:A kalashnikov is not an automatic.

Not the ones covered by the ban, the AK-47 does come in semi-auto and full-auto.

Background -
Automatic (full-auto) weapons are heavily restricted to civilians and governed by the National Firearms Act of 1934. In order for a civilian to own such a weapon, they must be a specially licensed ATF dealer selling such weapons to law enforcement and military or the following conditions must be met (not a list of all conditions but just the major ones):

FBI background check (not the Instant Background Check; but a full 6-month or longer investigation)
Registration of weapon
Transfer tax of $200 per NFA item
State approval
Local law enforcement approval
Weapon must be produced prior to 1986
ATF Approval

The M16 is a military weapon the civilian version is the AR-15. The AR-15 is also a semi-auto gun, I have that one as well - bought during the ban and available from numerous manufacturers before, during and after the ban.

The DC snipers used a post-ban Bushmaster missing all the evil parts the AWB stopped like the flash hider, bayonet lug and folding stock.

I was actually very surprised the DC snipers choose the AR-15 as it has low accuracy in the configuration they choose. It also ejects evidence (the spent shell casing) about 20 feet from the shooter. Only later, when I learned they hid in the trunk did that part make sense. They only fired one round - so the entire benefit of a "high capacity" magazine was lost.

Regardless your position on guns - the medias bias and lack of correct wording is always obvious to knowledgeable gun owners. They help to spread incredibly inaccurate information regarding semi-automatic weapons. It sure makes your average gun owner very suspicious their agendas when they make such errors.
