My brother in law who is an MD claims that nicotine is by far more addictive than heroin: You kick the big H after 48 hours of cold turkey (if you survive) but nicotine stay in your body for 5 years or more.

Having read what Charlie Parker and William Burroughs wrote about same subject it seems like strong character people get on and off heroin at will any time. Nicotine seems to be a little bit more aggressive than that.
