The reason Enron would give money to an environmental group would be to use them as a smoke-screen, as cover.

Chevron I know also gives money to environmental groups, so they can use that as PR. They might also use it as an opportunity to spy on the group, which is a natural opponent.

Meanwhile their core business is destructive to the environment, totally destructive in some cases, and they prop up and fight for pro-pollution and anti-environmental politicians and policies.
