I think they just build up the images from commercial satellite photos - they'll only be as up to date as when they last updated their photo earth. Also, the image quality is only commercial grade too, which is getting better all the time.

I looked at my house, but what I really enjoy doing is exploring canyons here where I live in Utah from space, then going and visiting them on the ground. Check out the Grand Canyon! You can take a virtual raft trip, and see boats on the Colorado.
