Wild, Sexy & Beautiful: Sirius to Release Playboy Videos on MovieCD
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1997--
Playboy's Best-Selling Videos Come to the Computer Screen
on CD-ROM; Includes Several Day & Date Releases with VHS Titles
Consistent with Playboy's image of exploring state-of-the-art delivery systems for its highly-regarded productions, Playboy Entertainment Group and Sirius Publishing Tuesday jointly announced a multiyear agreement to release Playboy Home Video titles on CD-ROM through Sirius' MovieCD(TM) product line.
MovieCD delivers VHS quality, full-screen, full-motion video on home, office or laptop computers without the use of MPEG or other computer hardware peripherals. MovieCD plays on the existing installed base of over 30 million CD-ROM equipped computers in the United States.
The title selection features 30 of Playboy's most popular videos from the past, present and future including many new titles which will be released to MovieCD on or near the same day and date as their home video release on VHS.
"For over 40 years Playboy has been the voice of freedom for American men and women and one of the most powerful voices in American culture," stated Richard Gnant, Sirius Publishing's president and chief executive officer.
"All of us remember the first time we saw Playboy. We remember the covers, the cartoons, and the centerfolds. Playboy had that sort of impact on many of our lives and changed the face of America forever. Playboy's MovieCD titles will become the ultimate form of computer entertainment for techno-savy males of the 90's.
"We are proud that Playboy Entertainment has chosen to make their popular videos available using our cutting edge technology of today," concluded Gnant.
"We are excited to participate with Sirius' MovieCD product line to offer Playboy fans the ability to watch our highly-regarded productions in a uniquely appealing format," said Barry Leshtz, senior vice president and general manager, Home Video at Playboy Entertainment Group. "Playboy has always prided itself on being at the forefront of the latest software options, and MovieCD allows us to showcase these programs in a truly contemporary manner."
"This is one of the most exciting acquisitions we've ever made for MovieCD," said Michael Weiss, Sirius' vice president of Entertainment and Business Development. "The Playboy MovieCD titles are more than just single titles representing a simple 'retrospective' collection.
"They represent a wild ride through the fantasy and freedom that is uniquely Playboy -- entertainment served up with humor, sophistication, and spice reflecting a man's vision of romance and fantasy. Playboy videos are rich in romantic artistry," Weiss concluded.
Playboy is the second most recognized brand name in the world. Playboy's website is one of the most popular sites on the Internet and regularly receives over 1 million hits daily. The success of the Playboy Home Video line is evident from a look at the Billboard Magazine year-end home video sales charts for 1996, which include major theatrical blockbuster films.
Playboy was Billboard's number one video sales label for 1995 and 1996. Their titles have spent more time on the Billboard Top 40 video sales chart than any other supplier. "Based upon Playboy's history, we expect male computer users everywhere will fuel huge consumer demand for these titles on MovieCD," Weiss predicted.
MovieCD titles from Playboy will be drawn from such top-selling series as the gold-certified Playmate Review programs, compilations of Playmate video profiles; the Playboy Video Centerfold series, including special Anniversary, Playmate of the Year and Celebrity Centerfold issues; Playmate Video Calendar; and additional themed video pictorials such as Playboy's Spring Break and Playboy's Cheerleaders.
Four titles will be released monthly beginning this September with Playboy Wet & Wild VIII, Playboy's Voluptuous Vixens, Playboy's Girls In Uniform, and 1997 Playboy Video Playmate Calendar. Playboy on MovieCD will be priced similarly to Playboy's video releases at $19.98 MSRP per title and will be distributed by Sirius.
MovieCD utilizes a proprietary video software compression technology developed by Sirius' sister company, Motion Pixels, to deliver images as crisp and clear as VHS videocassettes. "Consumers already have CD-ROM capability, and they don't need to purchase new machines or additional computer hardware or software for their PCs to play this innovative new product," Gnant said.
The recommended system requirements for Playboy MovieCD are Windows 95, Pentium processor, 16 MB RAM, quad speed CD-ROM drive, PCI-bus video adapter with 1MB RAM, 265Kb level 2 cache, sound card, mouse and speakers.
Sirius Publishing, well known in the computer industry for its popular 5 ft 10 Pak(TM) brand of multipacks, has released over 65 film and specialty titles on MovieCD this year. Sirius has sold over 300,000 units of MovieCD titles to date and has secured licensing deals from 14 companies.
