i can understand why people live in the country, and why they live in the city or the para-city. but i have a harder time understanding why they live next to a wide spot in the road with a strip mall. this kind of suburban blight is so popular in the Southwest. usually there are no trees and traffic is terrible (even though there is nothing interesting nearby), schools are overcrowded and forced to use permanent "temporary" buildings.

Joel Garreau wrote a well-received book on edge cities back in the 90s. now it's a bit dated, but still a good read.
