Alighieri,

re:Background checks at gun shows

First the gun show loophole is a myth - every dealer at every gun show in the entire country must do the required NICS background check. What the anti-gun crowd calls the "gun show" loophole is the fact that if you or I want to sell a gun it's called a private transfer and we do not have to perform a background check on the buyer. This is true if we sell our personally owned guns at a gun show, via the newspaper, garage sale or to a friend, family member or a neighbor.

That said, a case could be made to require a background check for any private transfer. A dealer will charge you $25 to do this for you today. Some people when selling a private gun to a stranger will require on their own that the buyer do this. Without tracking all guns it would be really hard to know when a transfer takes place - so even if a law were created it would be on the honor system for decades. It is true that about 40-50% of crime guns come from family or friends, less than 0.7% are bought at gun shows. The fear is that once you start tracking guns, you start confiscating the ones you don't like using the list you've created. A lot like other personal information misuse fears we all have about our government.

re:child safety locks

On this issue I agree - it's hard to understand their original position against locks. Today the NRA has changed their position and encourages every manufacturer to provide locks. It's hypocritical to encourage safety and at the same time be against inexpensive locks.
