I understand that, but the problem is that your not supplying them doesn't stop them from drinking. A lot of problems fit that model--so what do you do?

From one old geezer (me) to another; it's an age/old problem.

Many of us pragmatic old farts would dialogue in favor of legalizing certain kinds of drug usage. And so we tend to fall into the mindset that favors the parents in these situations - they are, after all, dealing with pure unadulterated reality.

As the geezer factor diminishes downward to the young idyllic uninitiated, the mindset changes and the silly (not all are silly, mind you) laws of the land prevail.

Of course, I fall into the reality driven decision of the parents who know their kids are going to drink, so they decide to manage the process.

Those naysayers will "geezify" in their own time.
