The fear is that once you start tracking guns, you start confiscating the ones you don't like using the list you've created. A lot like other personal information misuse fears we all have about our government. The fear factor is a tool the NRA uses quite effectively to oppose any form of gun control regulation. Once you start speculation based on fear all reason is lost. I can't imagine an organization that today has reached political power able to change the landscape of elections, going from assenting to common sense, responsible controls to being subjected to confiscation by goverment.
