On March 20, 1970 Cambodian troops under General Lon Nol attacked Khmer Rouge and North Vietnamese forces inside Cambodia. At the White House, Nixon and top aides discussed plans to assist Lon Nol. On April 30, 1970 President Nixon stunned Americans by announcing U.S. and South Vietnamese intrusion into Cambodia "...not for the purpose of expanding the war into Cambodia but for the purpose of ending the war in Vietnam and winning the just peace we desire." The announcement generated a wave of protesting by:

Average Americans
On May 1, 1970 a combined force of 15,000 U.S. and South Vietnamese soldiers attacked NVA supply bases inside Cambodia. However, throughout this, NVA and Vietcong carefully avoid large-scale battles and moved westward, further into Cambodia, leaving behind their base camps containing large amounts of weapons and ammunition. On May 1, 1970 President Nixon called anti-war students "bums blowing up campuses." On May 2, 1970 American college campuses erupted in protest over the invasion of Cambodia.
