PETA cares about press because they are trying to change the way people think about animals. They are pretty uninterested in perpetuating their own existence except for the good they do for animals, and if you look at their financial statements, which are public, they really have a very low rate of administrative costs. Most of the money they collect is designated for a variety of animal programs.
