That's been the Democrats problem for well over a decade. I'm not sure what's new about that problem? The Republicans have convinced middle America to vote for them for cultural reasons. Lee Atwater was a key figuring in reshaping the Republican message to fit middle American voters values and shift the South away from the Dems.

That strategy works fine when the country is enjoying good times and relative peace and prosperity like the 1990s, but the message starts getting overridden by economic and other cocerns in times of crisis and turmoil.

The question really is can the Democrats craft a positve message that motivates people to vote for them? The ecomony is still quite good right now, which will help the Republicans in 2006. If the economy was going sour right now, the Rs would be in big trouble. The Democrats have to figure out a way of portraying a new vision for America, one that involves peaceful solutions, using our longstanding clout as a world leader to forge peace, reinvesting in our people, providing healthcare at affordable costs. If the Dems can come up with a positive message they will make gains in Congress next year.
