Wasn't Hacket running in a pretty strong Republican district in Ohio? It was no surprise he lost. But the small margin was a surprise. He did far better than any Democrat in recent history in that district. Even Newt said Republicans should take notice.

The point is if a Dem ran so strongly in a solidly Republican district, then what does it mean for swing districts in 2006? A 10% swing towards the Dems in many swing districts will win them many close races.

It's been a long time since the Republicans took a beating at the polls. I'm just saying don't get too comfortable using the past Republican victories as forward looking guide. 2006 is not 1994, it's not 2000, it's not 2004, it's 2006, 12 years after the Republicans took over the House or Representatives, 3 years after a increasingly unpopular war, with gasoline prices double or triple earlier years, etc.

Momentum plays a big role in life, and right now the momo is swinging agaisnt the Rs next election cycle. I'm not saying that can't change, but right now it seems it's up to the Democrats to come up with a positive message to move America forward and if they do they will make big gains next year in this climate.
