There is an old joke that has much truth to it in that while hiking in bear country you should have pepper spray and wear bells on your shoes to make noise so as to not startle bears. In some areas there are both black bear and grizzly and then it's helpful to be able to identify which is which by their poop so you know if a grizzly is around, black bear skat will be piled high and have an aroma of berries, grizzly will be piled high but will smell like pepper spray and have bells in it:)

Pepper spray is not very effective on a charging grizzly and I would choose the 44 legal or not personally.
