Pat & Amati Fans - The people who post here are more knowledgeable about the technical differences of ADSL than I, a finance geek. However, when I read the posts about CAP leaks and noise I am dumdfounded and wonder to myself if anybody knows the condition of the outside plant.
The amount of skotch locks, cuts in the copper sheathing, crimping and endless sloppiness by the repair and installation folks is enormous. The wiring on the Other Coast, in older areas, was installed by Alexander Graham Bell Himself. Yes, I did Cable Maintenance for 4 months during a strike and I was fixing all kinds of problems. A little conditioning kept me out of the Pick Cable, where I was doing more harm than good.
Thanks to Judge Green, there is no incentive for any Telco to improve the Inside Wire in homes, because telcos must charge at least <$90 hr. for this service. A wealthy old-lady friend of my wife's wants us to buy her beautiful, but not updated house. It has inside wire, jacks and a Network Termination Interface that could be in The Smithsonian. I am talking about 2+ acres, 2 homes, a corn crib?, ect.. and this is 15 miles from Manhattan as the crow flies. Can you imagine what's in rural areas?
Everybody talks in hi-tech terms, but the last mile for high speed data will only work with a product that does the least damage and need the least amount of conditioning period. IMHO, this can be only DMT based ADSL.
Please don't shoot the messenger.
