Were you a Dem in 1960 John? I'm sure you wanted Kennedy and he was a Catholic.... The Dems were for Kennedy then. Why the change?

Are the Dems now anti-Catholic?????

Of course, not. A great many Dem politicians are believing Catholics, not just Catholics.

You may/will recall this issue came up with Kennedy. Would he be subservient to the Pope? He made the famous presentation in Houston which took care of that argument. He was his own man. And there was no set of bishops threatening expulsion from the church at the time.

Things have changed. But the thing that is the same is the need for presidents and supreme court justices to make their loyalties clear.

As for whether this argument hurts Roberts, I doubt it.

As for whether I was a Dem in 1960, I was a Hubert Humphrey Dem in 1960 and subscribed to the notion there was very little difference between Nixon and Kennedy. Remember Arthur Schlesinger's famous book on that point. That was far more important to me than the Catholic issue.
