Well, the anthropologist would answer that Diamond is a Cultural Materialist, one of their own, if a bit narrow in his thesis. Culture is a result of the interplay of various factors, including environment.

I'm torn between the Marxist-derived Cultural Materialism and a more Idealist Durkheim-ish explanation. If Durkheim didn't fall into mysticism, he might have been spot-on. I did a major research paper in college on Durkheim's Division of Labor, which is a masterpiece. Anthropology disservices itself by ignoring his early work.
