Elmatador Re: "foreign carmakers" But they were there manufacturing cars because THEY HAD TO because of the tariff walls, otherwise they would have just shipped product in from their established manufacturing plants elsewhere without the expense and problems of opening new plants in a remote country. Read any history of the US car makers or a biography of Henry Ford or Alfred Sloan or any of thier peers. There was only ONE REASON to establish a manufacturing plant in a remote place and that was to avoid a tariff. And even with that there were problems and political favors to be paid for as many parts were still brought in from the mother country, and exposed to various tariffs.

I bet your tariffs in those days ran 50% plus on imported cars. And the same with telecom gear and everything else. THe key is the protective tariff. Without it local industry never develops.
