Canada exports softwood anger
By KATHLEEN HARRIS, SUN OTTAWA BUREAU

Canada's trade minister has given his U.S. counterpart an earful over the softwood lumber issue, saying Canadians are outraged by the disregard for NAFTA rules.

Jim Peterson called Rob Portman to warn that the future of NAFTA is in peril if the U.S. fails to end the dispute and cough up the $5 billion owed in duties.

This week Canada won a major victory with a favourable NAFTA panel ruling on softwood lumber, but the U.S. said it has no plans to comply.

Warning that the world is watching as the nasty trade dispute unfolds, Peterson threatened Canada will retaliate with punitive measures as legal options dry up.

Peterson said his counterpart empathizes with Canada's position, but admitted there's not yet light at the end of the tunnel.

"Portman and I agreed that it's time to declare a truce, and there can be no doubt that this victory strengthened our hand," he said.

The Prime Minister's Office confirmed yesterday that Paul Martin will make a personal pitch to U.S. President George Bush to drive home Canada's position.
