I go back and forth in my estimation of Filkins but, whatever I think of his abilities, this is, by far, the bleakest Iraqi piece of his I've read. And perhaps the bleakest the New York Times has published

I tend to go more from the milbloggers who are there, and the Australian press. Michael Yon is the "Ernie Pile" of this war.

Filkens, Burns, and the rest of them are holed up in their Hotels writing their stories from the "police reports" they get from the green zone of daily casualties. When they go out to interview, their interpreters are the Sunnis who used to be their "minders" when Saddam ran things, and they get the information these ex-Bathists want to give them.

Then add to that the fact that they were against this war from the start, and you realize how slanted a picture you are getting.
