True, the SPD is far behind the CDU (29 vs. 42%), but the problem is that we have two new Pied Pipers, Lafontaine & Gysi. They have founded a new Socialist party which has rapidly gained followership and is currently stronger (10%) than the Greens and the FDP (9% and 6%).
