I can't produce a link because its old version of the daily news (for some reason no URL appears), but here's some of the reading that produced my understanding of theIranian election results.

Ahmadinejad is man of the masses

By Jumana Al Tamimi, GCC & Middle East Editor, July 26

Dubai: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came out victorious in the presidential elections because he was "closer" to people, particulary the underprivileged class, than his rival, and not because he represents the hardline camp, said veteran Iranian political analysts yesterday.

"Secondly, Ahmadinejad managed to infiltrate into peoples' hearts, particularly the poor and those who believe the government should fight administrative and economic corruption," he told Gulf News by phone. His way of dealing with the people influenced the voters much more than the camp the president-elect comes from: the conservatives.

Ahmadinejad sought support among those embittered by the social changes and those who have suffered in Iran's faltering economy.
