Not up on fighting tactics, but I think a downstroke would be more effective.

I got to wondering how I knew that after I posted. I've known a few cops over the years, I assumed one of those guys told me that. Then it dawned on me; I read that in one of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels, so take it for what it's worth. I would add though, that Connelly was a crime reporter and is plugged into the LA police department. His novels are a favorite with cops.
