There is no threatening shortage of gold. You may want to revisit the
following post:

Mind you, assuming there is gold (and other PMs) and it is recoverable,
the cost of recovery should be lower than the average of the industry.

Evidently, the current lower gold prices are starting to render high cost
mines obsolete. Given the global reserves and desire of the various
countries to lighten up on their holdings, it is doubtful that the
mines that are now being closed will be reopened any time soon, if at all.
