Thomas and Bill: I'd like to throw in one other factor for the possible popularity of NCs. Simplicity at the highest value tasks.

The vast majority of people use their PCs to do email and go on-line. A WebTV with printer port (available now) does not have a word processing facility on it yet but I bet that would be trivial. In the same way, NCs are going to have a 'point and click' interface that will not require the type of hardware/software knowledge that you need in the Wintel world.

Most people in the high tech community are very bright. We also like tinkering with the equipment. We are the exception.

I submit that the pricing freefall in the PC marketplace has as much to do with functionality as anything else. People know what they want to do. A little WP. Perhaps a little Quicken. Go on-line. E-mail. You can get a great machine that does exactly that for $999 today. Please check out the WSJ's section 2, page 1 story on cheap PCs and their strategic impact on the industry. If Web TV has a printer, how long do you think it will take them to put WP functions in. They already have an on-line banking deal with Wells Fargo.

Web TV is owned by Microsoft. Microsoft is rumored to be doing a deal with Sega. My guess would be more internet appliance devices - not game players. Oh, and I don't see Intel in there.

At the same time, IBM has started to talk about a network computer initiative next month. Bet it has nothing to do with Microsoft - but they may use Intel chips.

So, at the very least, there may be forces out there decoupling W and Intel.
