Come on, the jury is still out, regardless of what some editorial article says. Take a look at Iraq in ~2010, then see if you were right or wrong.
If the US's pre-invasion predictions of success in 6 months were completely innaccurate, the above quote could just as well be completely removed from the reality that will eventuall surface.
The key question is will whatever eventually surfaces in Iraq be better or worse than 20 more years of Saddam followed by 20 years of Uday?
If you ask me to speculate, I can wonder into many scenarios, some of which don't match your descriptions. Evolution of societies has taken many unexpected forms. Could you guess that an evolved nation like ours would regress to the point where its president advocates religious non sense like intelligent design as a science in its schools?
The point should be that the administration declared "mission accomplished" weeks after the invasion. Iraq was to become the model of the ME, tranform the region, pay for itself, be the friend of the USA, blah, blah, blah....
Think about the avalanche of lies and mistakes that are Iraq today. If you have a stake in it, like a dead son (Shehaan), at best you grieve and demonstrate to a heartless bastard of a president, at worst you might want to kill something...even if you don't have a direct familial stake in it, you should be enraged that the country is mired in this mess.
