I still think it's possible to talk, in an agreeable fashion, about even fundamental disagreements.

I have spent a lot of time pondering this since I've experienced it on SI. I really prefer talking to people with whom I have differences. I'm interested in learning their take and sharing mine. I don't think that many people enjoy differences. So I've given some thought to what makes me an outlier (something that life gives me lots of opportunities to do <g>).

What I notice in people who come at this differently than I do is that they are either partisan or emotional or both. I am neither. I don't know which of those or if either of those is key. I was impressed by some study that got a lot of attention a while back that found that people, once having joined a party, tended to change their views to conform rather than holding on to their individuality. Lotsa pressure in partisanship to drive out heresy.
