Harper: Lower tax on gasoline

HALIFAX (CP) - Conservative leader Stephen Harper says Ottawa could reduce the price of gasoline between two to five cents a litre without even breaking a sweat.

He renewed his call Wednesday for the federal government to stop double taxing gasoline through the Goods and Services tax.

Harper said Ottawa could also reduce its surtax on gasoline, introduced in the mid-1990s, as a deficit-fighting measure.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the Canadian Automobile Association have both called for Ottawa to take action.

The average price for gasoline is now above a dollar a litre across the country.

Federal Natural Resources Minister John Efford rejected the notion of a tax cut Tuesday, saying it would not do a thing to ease the pain at the pumps.

Nova Scotia Finance Minister Peter Christie said government might be forced by angry motorists into reducing some fuel taxes.

Much of the anger is focused on the GST/HST because the sales tax is added on top of the existing provincial fuel tax - in effect doubling it.
