Ed,

I will try and answer :-)

* Can a foreign nation fight and win the battle for enlightenment and a better life for the citizens of another nation or must those people change from within and fight for their own freedom and liberty?

Both have been demonstrated. Positive examples of fighting from within are the US and France. Positive examples of imposed enlightenment are Germany and Japan.

Of course Vietnam is the counter-example. If they had lost with logistical support I guess it wouldn't be disputed - but....

* Can a nation of people who are intolerant of other religions, culturally inclined to oppress women and convinced that their ways are sanctioned by their God, function as a democratic majority that protects the rights of women and minorities?

It has worked in Japan. Not sure we or anyone else tried this elsewhere.

* Can you "encourage and promote" change in the culture of another nation by occupying that nation and using force of arms to effect that change?

Worked in Germany and Japan.

* If you enter another country to "help" that country and the people opposing your "help" are generally willing to fight and die for their views while the people endorsing your "help" are generally not, what does that tell you about the likelihood of success?

Jury is out. This is specific to Iraq since no other country I can think of was conquered that easily and had enough time to prepare the kind of internal/external insurgency we have seen. Clearly this one is unprecedented, but even if the insurgency was 100% internal - its constituency only represents 20% of the population. Since it is unlikely that the 80% will be willing to go back to the prior status - success is more likely in the long run than not.
