Cheney tells veterans in Springfield U.S. will ‘not relent’ in Iraq

By RICK MONTGOMERY

The Kansas City Star

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Vice President Dick Cheney told a veterans group today “we will not relent” in the cause to bring freedom and peaceful order to Iraq.

“We will see this cause to the end,” he pledged.

In a brief, noontime appearance at the national convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Cheney invoked the hardships and heroism of George Washington’s Continental Army troops in 1776: “They stayed in the fight and America won the war.”

Cheney, reading from a prepared text, spoke 20 minutes to about 400 members of the service organization representing combat-wounded veterans and their families. The vice president’s motorcade left the University Plaza Hotel immediately after his address there.

“Once again, we’re seeing the power of freedom to change the course of the world,” said Cheney, citing the January elections in Iraq but making no reference to slipping support for the war in American opinion polls.

“We have no illusions about the difficulty of (facing) an enemy who recognizes neither the laws of warfare nor the standards of morality,” he said in remarks interrupted six times by applause.
