His attempts to shut down criticism of Israel in certain American academic circles is illustration enough.


Oh for crying out loud. Pipes never "shut down" a single comment from anybody. He criticized comments and held them up to be criticized. This is a distinction you have no problem understanding from the left - "We don't see a clear line from reasonable criticism to treason in the essay" - but from the right you don't allow for the possibility.

BTW, Pipes is not talking about "reasonable criticism" (by which I assume you mean constructive criticism) in his essay. He is talking about destructive criticism and actions that aid declared enemies. He cites the case of Johnny Walker Lindh, who certain went far far beyond mere criticism of any stripe, to taking up arms against America.
