Oh for crying out loud. Pipes never "shut down" a single comment from anybody.

Actually, and I know you didn't notice this, I was offering a gentle comment, trying to stay within the tone of Frank's observations.

What Pipes did was recruit students to harass faculty members in class, to post the names of faculty member they disagreed with on websites which invited more harassment of faculty members, including listing their home addresses, which extended the harassment to their families. And, one of the consequences of this, is to make lists for genuinely crazy folk to do even worse things.

You will, of course, argue that this was all acceptable. I can see no basis for it. Universities have established and reasonably workable means for addressing the problems of faculty members vis a vis students. But that wasn't what bothered Pipes and his followers. It was that the faculty members had the wrong views vis a vis Israel and Palestine.

Attempting to shut down is a mild way to put both his means and his ends.
