The existence of quantifiable goals and objections differentiates the situation from managing a tenured professor, who has no performance goals. If he/she stops teaching entirely, or commits a crime, you have a shot. But shoddy or even crackpot work? If he/she has tenure, you are SOL.

Collect some comments from people who have been on both sides of the corporate/academic divide (unlike JohnM).
