I think I can help you understand yourself better, if you will play along with me here.

Suppose a new batch of authenticated Truman papers is found. Among them is a letter to a trusted confidante that contains this passage:

I feel the need to confide in you why I authorized the A-bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While I was presented with many arguments pro and con, the paramount thought in my mind was that this weapon -- and our willingness to use it -- would confer superpower status on the U.S. in the postwar aftermath and thus thwart the ambitions of the Soviets for many years to come. This was my overriding motive. Needless to say, I pledge you never to reveal my thinking, as it would do more harm than good at this late date.
