He is a loser now - no matter what he does.

The goal will be to pass the problem on to the next Administration. We have a tendency to put the blame at the end rather than the beginning. And if it were to turn out to be a Democrat Administration, even "better". That way the right wing media would blame the Democrats for turning a victory into defeat.

Will there be calls for impeachment as the body count goes to 2,000? 3,000?

No.

I don't believe Americans in 2005 are the sheep they were in 1968 or 1972 even. People were more willing to give the President the benefit of the doubt then - it was still pre-Watergate. Many protested, but I think many more may resist this time - much earlier.

We are certainly more skeptical than we were in the 60s. And the support for the Iraq War has dwindled far more rapidly than it did for Vietnam. On the other hand, the public is still subject to fear mongering. I have a bet with a friend. He bets that if there is a terrorist attack in the US Bush's support will vanish; I'm betting that it will soar.
