That's the only reason it's one country now. The US wants one country, because the Turks don't want the Kurds to be independent and we wanted to get Turkey to support the effort. But there is no Iraqi interest in keeping the country in tact.

Wales, Scotland and London might also have become "three countries" (but Wales and Scotland got some promises of their future, while North Ireland was just tragic and funny).

They are headed in that direction. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have their own parliaments and representation in the English Parliament. I think that Northern Ireland only stayed as part of England because of the Catholic-Protestant conflict. There is some movement for other counties to have their own parliaments but it's doubtful in the near term and I don't think there's any interest in the other counties to split from England
