I care whether he cares about his poll numbers. The government of this country is supposed to be of the people and by the people and FOR the people- if the government ignores the people, that's a dictatorship, not a democracy. Responsiveness to polls, and the expressed will of the people, is a good thing- if you want a democracy. I'll grant you it stands in the way of authoritarian government, but I've always thought that was a good thing. Not everyone will agree with that, of course, since some people genuinely want more authoritarian government- give me a wimpy one any day, less threats to my freedom. In America we have almost always had less to fear from other countries, than from our own government- our priority should be to make our own government more accountable to the people, and to assure our own democracy, before we wander around the world trying to help other countries to "freedom".
