Peter Kierstein's teaching philosophy:

My Revisionist Teaching Philosophy: Revised July 2005

1) Teaching is a moral act. It is NOT a dispassionate, neutral pursuit of "truth." It is advocacy and interpretation.

2) Teach peace, freedom, diversity and challenge American exceptionalism on every front.

3) Move beyond the academic-concentration camp of one's "discipline." The word is unseemly.

4) Instructors should be unafraid to express their opinions and fully aware of Academic Freedom.

5) Encourage student discussion and dissent. Call on them, build their voices into your syllabus, listen to them and as leader in the classroom, don't hesitate to influence their ethical development and growth.

6) Your job is not to transmit the cultural western hegemony of the past but to reassess its relevance to the present.

7) Be demanding and have high expectations for your students. They will respond positively if they sense you are engaged, love your subject matter and are dedicated to their learning.

8) Higher education is basically a stultifying, conservative, risk-averse enterprise. Shake it up, teach outside the box and don't let the thought police intimidate you. It's students you serve, not colleagues, governing boards or public opinion. Teach for the students!

I daresay Prof. Kierstein is a card-carrying member of the "thought police."
