"If every power plant built since the first oil crisis been nuclear, our dependence on foreign oil would have been a fraction of what it is today"

Unlikely. There are very few purely oil fired plants, if any. Now true, there are many that can use oil as well as natural gas and often coal. But the price of oil has been higher than either of the other two for long enough that I doubt if any of them have burned any oil in a while.

Now having said that, I do favor nuclear power plants, have for a very long time. They don't release thorium and other radionuclides like coal plants do, and the high level waste is pretty compact and can be stored. Yeah, at some point we need to figure out what to do with it, but that can wait.
