I will have to disagree with you on whether Hagel is a "realist". Today, he talks about Iraq being another VN; that we are losing the war and that we don't have an exit plan. He doesn't talk about what needs to be done to win; what he believes would be the correct exit plan (since he disagrees with Bush)or whether winning this war in Iraq will help to stabilize IRAQ. So far, he is doing precisely what kerry-edwards-clark did pre election. Lotsa chatter with no specifics.

Hagel said we needed several hundred thousand more troops before invading Iraq in order to defeat hussein. He was wrong. In June, he said Gitmo should be closed. Nice. He doesn't tell us what he would do with the prisoners. S'pose we could install them in Leavenworth. IMO, Hagel needs to give us something more than sound bites.
