Missing the Spotlight

Over on “60 Minutes”, the first story tonight surrounded former CIA analyst Michael Sheuer, and his belief that the United States is still not payng enough attention to Osama bin Laden, and from his claims, should be paying more attention to Michael Sheuer.

I found it interesting to note, that Mr. Sheuer had nothing to say, at all, regarding the apparent replacement of bin Laden by Musab al Zarqawi as the leader of what’s left of Al Qaeda. Nothing to say regarding the diminishing capabilities of the group, in material resources and in tactical preparations. Nothing to say regarding the Iraqi elections in January, or the clear sea change in relations between the United States and most Arab governments.

Instead, Mr. Sheuer continues to blame the U.S. relationship with Israel for most problems in the region, and to claim that Osama bin Laden is becoming “stronger than ever”. I noticed that “60 Minutes” never asked Mr. Sheuer to explain why bin Laden has not been seen on tape in years, nor about the fatwas issued against Islamic Fascism, and against bin Laden in particular. But then, “60 Minutes” hasn’t itself cared about digging out the truth instead of telling the story it decides ahead of time, since Mr. Rather cared about such things.
