So for the third time or whatever, I am not interested in whether Bush is driven by poll numbers. I don't disagree with your statement; I just find it totally irrelevant to the discussion we are having.

The Republican party definitely IS driven by poll numbers (thank goodness for those Congressional elections every two years!), as well as the reality that there is probably no way we can win in Iraq, and if we stay longer we might lose much more catastrophically in terms of U.S. casualties and our inability to recruit enough soldiers to protect our interests around the globe.

I think you will soon see support for the war in Iraq crumble to almost nothing except for the true believers. You can already see from the news article I posted tonight that some Republican leaders are backing away from our commitments in Iraq. It is really kind of sad in terms of America's image in the world, because the terrorists did have us figured right in terms of turning tail and running when things get too messy. It was our mistake to go into Iraq, however. Too bad the Bushies didn't listen to any state department analysis of what Iraq was like, or how dismal our chances were there, in tribal lands which were never a natural country and where the risk of civil war was always very high. But Bush invited all the terrorists there. I have no idea what he was thinking! Not very clever!
