I have never written about all of America's leaders throughout its entire existence, so you have no basis in fact for your assumptions about whether I have something positive to say about some of them, Oral.

But more central to the discussion is whether patriotism is waving your flag reflexively for our country whether it is doing something just and good or horribly inhumane and bad, or the more constructive kind of patriotism that people with consciences and the ability to think independently have, where they believe it is their responsibility to speak out when they feel America has lost her way. I think that is a much higher and more meaningful kind of patriotism. The knee-jerk patriots will never lead America anywhere.

I think "my country, right or wrong" is a dishonorable kind of patriotism, in fact.
