he may even be a liberal of sorts Quite the grudging concession... The distinction between patriotism and nationalism may be getting blurred. Indeed. As I mentioned earlier, I did not read all of this discussion, but I think that at least one of the points in it is that there's a lot of either difference of opinion or confusion on how patriotism manifests. My sense is that we all know what it is but that some people go further and expect it to be exhibited in specific ways and, when those ways aren't apparent, conclude a lack of patriotism. Which IMO is both inapt and unfair.
