As for backups I think it is difficult to beat XXCLONE. Go to xxclone.com and read about it and download it free (for personal home use). It will clone one partition to another hard drive and make this 2nd hard drive bootable.

I keep my partition with the OS, software and important files as small as possible, which for me is less than 7 GB. I have a 2nd hard drive installed in the machine that is partitioned in a similar manner. It requires only a scant 5 minutes or so to completely "clone" C: to D: (or whatever your other drive's partition is). And this other partition will boot and run just like your C: drive -- if your BIOS allows you to select which drive/partition to boot from.

Simple, no extra fluff or nag messages about purchase, and it is free. A hard combo to beat. My $0.02. . .
