"Recently I've seen some disparaging comments about the notion of slapping a big tax on gasoline to fund a "Manhattan Project" for oil replacement. I think it's past time. It would have been a lot less painful if we'd done it earlier. That requires intelligent leadership, which is something we don't have now."

I completely agree that it is long past time to confront the ramifications of fossil fuel depletion. I am more pessimistic than most. My views follow closely along the lines of Jay Hanson, whose writings you may find on dieoff.org. He offers what I believe to be the most comprehensive analysis of the human condition available, explaining our situation in evolutionary/ecological/psychological/energetic/historical perspectives. If you haven't seriously studied evolutionary biology/evolution theory you will not understand the following essay, but that is no reason not to try. I was taking a course in evolutionary biology here at the University of Michigan at the same time I was introduced to peak oil, so it is all horrifyingly clear to me.
